ART AND CULTURE

In the cultural field Aristea Primary School strives to lead our learners to great heights. Cultural activities form part of Aristea's daily programme; either during the school day or outside.
Various art and culture activities are offered. Music, drama, dance and art are presented and from this flows concerts, Eistedfodd, exhibitions and performances. We believe that participation in cultural activities helps develop a positive self-image as well as emotional intelligence.

MUSIC
Individual
Budding musicians receive all kinds of opportunities to participate in one form of music or another.
Teaching is offered in the following instruments:

  • Recorder
  • Guitar
  • Piano
  • Violin
  • Music theory
  • Ukulele

Music students are given the opportunity to participate in competitions and perform in front of audiences. Chamber concerts are held on a regular basis to expose learners to smaller audiences. Informal performances at nursing homes and churches take place to highlight the service aspect of music. There are also two music concerts held annually in the school hall.
There is an opportunity to register for external examinations from Unisa, Royal Schools or Trinity College as well as the Eisteddfod. Many learners' names grace the roll of honor of UNISA.
Our music learners are regularly praised by high schools regarding the good musical foundation they received at Aristea Primary School.

Brass band
Here the learners are taught the basic principles of interaction. The brass band performs at Eisteddfods, concerts, cultural festivals, churches and nursing homes.
Aristea Primary School boasts the cup for the best Gr. 4 – 7 children's band, as well as for three consecutive years, with the cup for the most original band.

Choir
Our school has two choirs viz. Junior Choir (Gr 1-3) which currently consists of approximately 70 members and a Senior Choir (Gr 4-7) with almost 90 members. Learners must audition in order to join the choir. The Junior Choir practices on Thursdays from 07:30 to 08:30, and the Senior Choir practices on Tuesdays from 07:30 to 08:30.
The choirs perform at choral festivals, cultural festivals, churches, Eisteddfods and school functions.
Choral singing promotes and requires discipline.

EISTEDDFOD
Our school participates annually in the Tygerberg International Eisteddfod. Our participation spans a wide number of categories, i.e. individual reading and recitation, solo singing, recorder, art, handwriting, unprepared reading, choral singing, musical items, speaking choirs as well as dramatized group reading. Aristea Primary School has won the cup several times over the years for dramatized group reading, brass band, as well as speech choir.
Laerskool Aristea het oor die jare al verskeie kere die beker vir gedramatiseerde groeplees, slagorkes, asook spreekkoor, verower.

DRAMA
Drama classes are taught at Gr. 4 – 7 learners area and takes place once a week, in the afternoons. This takes place under the able guidance of our own Drama staff members. Learners enjoy themselves while learning more about facial expression, voice projection, anticipation, body language, etc. be taught. The aim of the drama is to offer learners self-confidence, creativity, correct use of voice and stimulation of the imagination with which they can enter the adult world. Throughout the year, learners learn to perform with confidence and ease in front of an audience. So these learners are comfortably employed in individual roles at school concerts. These learners also form a speech choir that participates annually in the Tygerberg International Eisteddfod.

Private drama classes: Isabel Byers
Gr. R – 3 learners have the privilege of joining these private drama classes. It takes place twice a week, after school, at Aristea.
This speech and drama platform is used to promote confidence and communication. Learners' vocabulary is broadened while their imaginations can enjoy free rein.

MODERN DANCING, HIP-HOP & BALLET
Modern dance, hip-hop and ballet are very popular with Gr R – 3 learners and are becoming popular Presented by Ms Hanlie du Toit. She uses a venue from Laerskool Aristea once a week to teach these dance forms.

CONCERT
Aristea Primary School holds an annual concert. This varies between a Foundation Phase, Intermediate Phase, or whole school concert. The concert includes text and dances that connect to a theme. Learners get the opportunity to express their creativity on a cultural level as well.

ART
The learners of Laerskool Aristea are privileged to receive art education by two very competent members of staff. Art forms part of the subject Life Orientation which lays down the guidelines for it. Creativity still reigns supreme and some of our learners' works are also entered in the Tygerberg Eisteddfod's art competitions.

TYGERBERG INTERNATIONAL EISTEDDFOD
Aristea Primary School is well known for being, until recently, the host school for the Afrikaans leg of the Eisteddfod.
As already mentioned above, our learners participate in various sections of the Eisteddfod, in both English and Afrikaans. We can proudly say that our learners are versatile and make their mark in many categories. Good performances and percentages are achieved annually.

NATURE CLUB
Aristea Primary School has had a bird club since 2015 where club members learn more about the identification and naming of different bird species. Quiz competitions are held in the Western Cape and numerous trips and camps take place. Aristea Primary School is proud to say that we have trained 58 bird watchers since our establishment in 2015.

This year our horizons are broadened and the learners are introduced to and exposed to many other aspects of nature, thus developing better appreciation and knowledge about wildlife.

PHOTOGRAPHY CLUB
Aristea Primary School launched a photography club in 2016. o.m. training sessions are held so that participant photographers can develop a finer eye. Regular field trips and camps provide hands-on learning experience. Numerous photos of club members have already achieved achievements at the Eisteddfod.

Aristea Primary School is proud to report that 54 aspiring photographers found their vision at the photography club. 12 Photography members belong to the club this year.

The members take part in PSSA (Photographic Society of South Africa) salons. Aristea's club belongs to the Photography Association of South Africa where high success rates have been achieved in competitions at provincial, national and international level.

The club truly offers an opportunity to everyone who wants to take a winning photo!
